Welcome
Party Kicks Off 76th NCA of California Convention
Moving to the dancingest (my term) music, convention delegates from all
parts of California rattled the walls and shook the floors, once again
proving that hairdressers really know how to let their hair down. The
theme "Gold Rush" was clearly visible by the dress of the evening.
Conventioneers dressed to the nines and some were reminiscent of the photos
posted in the early day post office lobbies.
The official opening ceremonies on Sunday were marked by an impressive
entrance by board members and past state presidents. Later in delegate
session President Jeanne Denice was presented with a proclamation from
California Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante. It was hand delivered by Larry
Vasquez an aide to the Lt. Governor. One of the most riveting and informative
talks of the day was one by Dr. Della Condon. She is the president of
the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. She is currently
serving as Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Instructional Services
at Delta College in Stockton. Noting that all work and no play is no fun,
the Sunday evening festivities for the delegates included the appearance
of William Morin a San Francisco singer and entertainer. The Monday session
included the election of officers and those elected were President Jeanne
Denice, Vice President Arnel Bailon, Secretary/Treasurer Clara Miller,
Financial Secretary Pat Garner, Directors Timothy Martin, Mary Lou Amaro
and Patty Gardner, Immediate Past President Robert Plato. Monday featured
the 2005 Sunrise Awards Recognition Brunch, Look Good Feel Better California
Division. Steven Rickards handled the welcome and introduced Look Good
Feel Better State Trainers, Rotha Anderson, Lupe Flores, Clara Miller
and Beverly Nason. The winners of the 2005 Sunrise Awards were Darlene
McDowell, National Cosmetology Association Certified Volunteer and Kaye
Yuen Look Good Feel Better General Volunteer. Late Monday afternoon was
taken over by Timothy Martin and Noel (nln) who demonstrated and presented
their body of works, "Photo Models/Editorial." Monday evening
was the time of pomp and ceremony. Newly elected state offices as well
as local affiliate officers were installed. Pat Garner and Ken Kassidy
were inducted into the NCA of California Hall of Fame and Eiko Studier
was selected Affiliate President of the Year. She heads the Golden Gate
Cosmetology Association affiliate.
So draws the convention to a close with a couple of foot notes....Eric
Wilson Associates was selected to guide the association for the coming
year. The company is headquartered in New York and is experienced in working
with associations.....From Fresno comes word that the local affiliate
